Can You Crack This? The Overlooked Netherlands Invention That Forged the Contemporary Globe
One can find many candidates for the title of “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, however, that honor should go to a automated sawmill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a modest trading ship required around 10 lumberjacks laboring over 90 days,” notes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber could be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical cutter, that turned timber into boards with almost no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct vessels more quickly than anyone else, which sparked a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and cultural dominance across the continent and the globe.
The Original True Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s initial true factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted its circular motion to vertical motion for the saw. Another component changed the rotary movement into a sideway’s movement advancing the log toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the log forward a measured step per cycle.
“Every component seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts in order that they operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each descending stroke and advancing with each upward motion. It was a remarkably clever use of basic parts.”

Construct a machine that turns rotary movement into up-and-down action. You have these components exclusively: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two rods. A “guide”, which is a cylinder or housing into which a single the bars can slide perfectly. (Consider that you can mount components on a base, so the parts do not collapse.)
