The defendant has asserted that the state's case against her is unsubstantiated

The offspring of ex- South African Head of State Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror charges at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban city.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over remarks she posted on online platforms in the past during fatal protests in South Africa that came after the arrest of her dad.

A seven-day period of disorder in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, resulted in at least three hundred dead and led to damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2bn).

The defendant has been alleged of inciting this turmoil and faces charges of provocation to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

Background of the Proceedings

The unrest were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KZN and came after the former president's arrest for ignoring a legal directive to testify at an inquiry into allegations of graft while he was serving as president.

She has repeatedly refuted the allegations against her, with her lawyer in the past calling the prosecution's evidence as insufficient.

She has also consistently stated the charges against her were an bid to resolve political disputes with her parent after he founded his own party and campaigned against the African National Congress.

Support and Legal Defense

This was supported by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and kinship harassment" against the former president and his relatives.

A handful of followers from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the judicial building, while her parent and other party leaders attended the hearings inside.

Her legal team has maintained that the proof presented by the state is inadequate and lacks substantial proof for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Legal Proceedings

  • Social media posts from the past form the foundation of the state's case
  • Deadly protests in July 2021 resulted in major casualties and economic damage
  • The accused is charged with multiple counts of incitement to violence
  • Court hearings are expected to proceed for multiple days

The trial continues as both sides present their arguments before the court in what is projected to be a closely watched judicial process with substantial policy implications for South Africa.
