European Union finance ministers are meeting in the EU capital this morning to tackle the bloc's economic priorities, featuring the increasingly urgent issue of financial support to Ukraine.

Ukraine's President States Nation's Existence Relies on Partners

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a recent interview that Ukraine's existence depended on receiving more funds from allies.

“I hope, with luck, they will approve the necessary funding,” he stated to media outlets. Otherwise, “We will have to find an alternative, it’s a question of our surviving. That’s why we need it urgently. And I count on partners.”

European Authorities Advocates €140 Billion Reparations Loan

The European Commission still hopes to persuade member states – and Belgium, which is currently blocking the proposal amid juridical concerns – to move ahead on a €140bn financial compensation based on Moscow's immobilized funds.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen insisted today that this represents “the most effective way to support Ukraine’s defence and national finances.”

Resolution Postponed Till December Meeting

A definitive resolution on the matter has been postponed till the European Council meeting in December, as the financial support required at the start of the coming year.

Discussions Coincide with Bribery Allegations in Ukraine

But the talks are happening during a difficult time for Kyiv, as Zelenskyy was forced to contain rising popular anger in the country regarding a corruption scandal in the energy sector, firing several officials who are accused of involvement in a extensive bribery scheme.

Danish finance leader Stephanie Lose was questioned on her response to the allegations, and insisted that there was commitment to keep aiding Ukraine.

“Naturally, The country will have to persistently focus with reforms, strengthening all parts of their society [and] including fighting graft … but it is clear that there’s a strong European support with Kyiv,” she stated.

Other EU Events Monitored

Separately, observers will be keeping an eye on Holland where the legislature meets to discuss possible directions in the government formation process, Rome-Tirana discussions in Rome offering the most recent opportunity to witness the remarkable leadership interplay, and a number of high-level meetings across Europe, including the Alliance's Mark Rutte’s visit to a military installation in Germany.
