A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on a Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the forty-year-old entertainer was confronted by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before running away.

The purpose of the shooting remains unclear and no arrests are in custody, according to authorities.

Details of the Attack

Police said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a location close to the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the property overseeing the installation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, as per local media.

"It is alleged the man was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities confirmed.

Security camera video reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a security uniform shooting on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.

Key evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the scene.

Authorities have requested members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the attack, and investigators have been following their trail to establish their whereabouts," stated a police chief.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," she said.
"Everyone understood he was a representative for countless citizens. He spoke out bravely about subjects not many people were ready to speak about. This is a devastating blow."

She urged the community to refrain from sharing explicit content from the scene, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, especially for Stock's young family.
