The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
