Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

New York police released video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
