Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
