Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing undesired offerings can be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done the right way.
A Charitable Clear-Out
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 presents received by her by international figures while abroad. The diverse haul reportedly features objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to sold to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline has not been finalized, but the goal is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with all funds raised benefiting a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Treasures
The presents reportedly stored in a secure area on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been sitting unused indefinitely.
The full gift list is yet to be made public, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was reviewed by officials. The query raised if a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
An International Array of Presents
The collection includes:
- A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Diplomatic Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
This charitable initiative symbolizes a distinct method to deal with the protocol gifts that are collected during a political career.
