Mystery Magenta Ooze on Isolated Tasmanian Coast Raises Anxiety of Possible Algal Bloom

Authorities in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a magenta ooze that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an algae outbreak.

Broad Occurrence Across Shore

The rosy-colored ooze was found on a stretch of a coastal area about 60km south of the city. A like substance has also been noted on parts of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.

Samples Collected for Testing

Examples have been taken and sent to the environmental agency for testing. A representative stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural event in response to variations in minerals, warmth, rain or sunlight".

"These blooms are occasionally called reddish tides because the outbreaks can change the water reddish," the spokesperson said. "Few phytoplankton events are harmful, with several kinds serving as a key source of nourishment for marine life in the oceanic food chain."

"The primary reason of reddish water in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause luminous nighttime effects at night."

Increasing Occurrence Linked to Global Warming

Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their occurrence has increased in recent years, partly due to environmental shifts and environmental waste that join together to create nutrient-rich waters geared for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that usually act as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their numbers that disturbs the proper operation of aquatic systems.

These occurrences have been likened to marine infernos and can continue to grow as long as conditions are ripe. In worse situations, delicate ocean habitats can be wiped out as aquatic animals is eliminated or deprived of oxygen, supplying more food for the bloom.

Past Severe Bloom in South Australia

Another region in the past dealt with a severe phytoplankton proliferation along its southern coastline after a string of oceanic warm spells, which spread across an extensive zone. The event resulted in beachgoers with irritated eyes and hacking coughs and may have eliminated up to numerous aquatic species across hundreds of species, according to official estimates.

Expert Assessment on the Current Case

An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the onset of that event said, based on photos of the current situation, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".

"We have seen many of these blooms around the island of late," she added.

The expert stated the algae did not generate toxins comparable to the organism involved in South Australia's devastating event, but it does eat tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.

"You usually see a proliferation of this algae after a bloom of another organism, or something like a marine breeding," she noted.

Demands for Investigation and Public Safety

Lilly Henley, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, said it appeared the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and suggested the fish farming business was the primary suspect, citing like situations overseas.

"Thus Tasmania needs to send a strong warning here, the authorities and the regulators need to act to this. We need to analyse the examples we've collected and we need to inform the public here," she emphasized.

She said she had concerns for community health after feeling a numbness along her body while being sprayed with tainted seawater.

Reports of Dead Animals and Appeals for Official Intervention

An advocacy organization has documented dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers appearing on the coast, with a veteran activist describing the event as an "natural disaster" and urging the local leader to visit and "take control the reaction that authorities must be doing".

"He needs to understand this is a disaster in the happening, economically as well as environmentally."

Official Reaction

Speaking to journalists, the official said he was uninformed of any connections between the event and the aquaculture sector, stating scientific testing was required before judgments could be made.

"We need to ensure our rivers and seas are environmentally safe and sustainable," he remarked.

"Our coastal assets across the state are our resources and we need to make sure the public and our business sector can coexist to enjoy our aquatic resources productively and sustainably."
