Preparations for Putin-Trump Meeting Delayed Days Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.

This past week Trump indicated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital within two weeks to address the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with sources suggesting Trump had pressured him to cede large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.

Yet, on Monday Trump supported a peace initiative supported by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the hostilities on the current front line.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Lavrov commented on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of extensive requirements that involve the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

Zelensky stated conversations concerning the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday came ahead of speculation that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he remarked.
