PSG Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening trophy on 14 different times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the scoring early on.

However, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 penalty win.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
