The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Selection in English Ashes Squad
England have chosen a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the first Test to determine whether the venue pitch favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if the spinner enters the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five past matches.
In those games, 134 wickets have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to provide some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.
However the coach has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they come out and excel out here.”
