UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a girl containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned church.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
