The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
