During the bulk of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress forged from the memories of Vecna. Their quest for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall for good.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is revealed about Brenner's work, the container most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the endgame conflict ahead.
